Salvaging something from unused videotelephony capabilities

Insightful and sometimes acerbic observations on the world of mobile and wireless technology especially FMC wireless VoIP convergence smartphones operator data services mobile broadband spectrum issues and IMS.
One of the background themes in 2007's mobile industry has been:"What can we do exploit the unused videotelephony capabilities we put in for 3G?"Pretty much all 3G UMTS handsets have a forward-facing secondary camera intended for videotelephony. It typically comes with software for controlling a video call and uses the H324M protocol. But unsurprisingly nobody uses it. 3G videotelephony was one of those applications (like MMS) which was designed by committee rather than on the basis of how users actually behave. To use mobile videotelephony you undergo to hold the telecommunicate alter up level in front of your face or else the camera gets a great believe of either your nostrils or your earhole. This is uncomfortable unnatural and downright dangerous if you're walking or driving. Then there's minor issues like unclear pricing (question: do YOU experience how much a video call would be you with your current tariff?) privacy and a total lack of consumer demand. Put simply it's useless it's always been useless and it will probably always be useless. (As will be proved yet again with the upcoming IMS variant called Multimedia Telephony).(Although I did see a drunk woman waiting for a bus last night pointing the camera at the bus stop as bear witness to loudly be to her preserve that she was actually on her way home. So maybe just desire MMS being used for embarrassing photos in the pub the optimum usage case for video calling is beat summed up as 'seven pints of beer and a bring together of tequilas'). And despite the pointlessness of videocalling even the still ships with the capability anyway wasting measure & money in BoM software and integration & testing. And annoyingly it isn't even possible to remove the video label application so it just sits in the telecommunicate wasting memory with unused icons cluttering the domiciliate check lengthening menu lists and adding unnecessary clicks to the user undergo. But something interesting is happening now.... unconstrained by the bewildering user-ignorance of standards bodies some genuine innovation is happening with mobile video. Developers undergo started to realise that it might be possible to deliver something from the wreckage of videotelephony. After all there's now a standards-based video client on 10's of millions of handsets so perhaps it can be pressed into service for something a bit more intelligently-conceived than person-to-person video calls. Some interesting examples of H324M use cases include:
Now not all of these are ameliorate and there obviously are limitations in using client software originally designed for something else but the general concepts are going in the right direction. The nicest thing is that using the built-in video client means that developers don't have to design their own software and port it to 10 different OS's laboriously. I've had assorted briefings discussions & collateral with a lot of companies in this lay. I know the guys at NMS Communications pretty well and they & their partners have some. And then I had an interesting discussion & some demos over dinner with the other night around the mobile video furnish as well. (Ewan at SMS Text News has a great write-up ). Radvision and a clump of other companies play in this lay too. Now there are definitely still some challenges here - the video quality isn't always good enough for some applications and there's usually no option to deliver the video stream to the phone's memory as well as send it over the air. This means that the mobile video-call approach is best suited to 'real measure' applications like TV viewing - otherwise you might as well as just use the videocam function save the file to a memory separate and assign it to a PC later on. Once it's on a PC you can email it upload it to YouTube and so on - usually for free. There's also still the question about pricing and whether it fits with prepay models. But overall. I'm a bit more positive about niche applications for mobile video - now that it's being exploited by market-savvy application designers rather than some just group of academic grey-beards decreeing that videotelephony is 'obviously' a good idea.....
I had some thoughts about video label recently. Why didn't users use it more in social networking sites as the alternative to webcam ?I belive the price is issue. The development could be done. I hope...
Dean as you said using the video capabilities in a handset for video telephony is really quite a lost cause in the near term. Using the video capabilities to support user-generated content uploads to social networking sites has been booming for the measure year or so. All operators in lacquer. Korea and Helio in the US undergo plenty of technology and marketing messages to give this cram; usually only as a means to get/defend gross adds rather than as a monetizable service.
I be to agree with you. Video Telephony using H324 (3G-324M) by itself is of no real use to most of the population but I view it as an enabler - once you undergo it you can start thinking of the different services and applications that can utilize it.
There's another use for the video camera on the telecommunicate: use it as a webcam with your laptop/PC for fixed video-conferencing. It's useful if your laptop/PC doesn't have a camera. analyse this cerebrate:http://www motvik com/

Congress has gone home for a two-week break with incomplete. They can't go any appropriations they can't pass the Farm Bill they can't pass a new Iraqi supplemental account. Yet it looks at though the Democrats may have finally. Activists have been pointing out for a long time that we can end the war by refusing to go more supplemental funding to fight it. That's obviously a less than ideal way of conducting U. S foreign policy but it is better than a never ending sinkhole of federal dollars and human lives. The Democrats undergo finally taken our advice.
Now. Democratic leaders say they won't send President Bush a war spending bill this year. They reason the military has enough money to run through mid-February.
Responding to the congressional blockage. Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Friday signed a memo ordering the Army to begin planning for a series of expected cutbacks including the layoffs of as many as 100,000 civilian employees and another 100,000 civilian contractors starting as early as January. Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said.
Naturally this provides the Republicans the opportunity to say the Democrats are abandoning the troops in the field.
"We ought to get the troops the funding they need to end the mission without restrictions and without a surrender date," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. R-Ky...
.."We'd rather see the Department of Defense the military planners and our troops focusing on military maneuvers rather than accounting maneuvers as they displace out their mission in the handle," [deputy WH press secretary] Fratto said...
.."Sen. Schumer only wants to finance pay body armor and chow for the troops if he can put conditions on the money so that they cannot do the mission they have been ordered to do," said [Heather] Wilson. R-N. M.
Republicans said there were appalled by Sen. throw Schumer's comment reported by The Associated touch on Thursday that the Bush administration wouldn't get a "free lunch."Schumer. D-N. Y. had told reporters that unless Bush accepted the restrictions the Defense Department would have to eat into its core budget."The days of a remove eat are over," he said...
.."We be to do more than say to the Iraqis that our patience has run out and that they need to seize the opportunity that has been given them," said Sen. Carl Levin. D-Mich. "Their dawdling ordain only end when they have no choice."
Democrats say they will act to push the president and his Republican allies to acknowledge their failed war policy and dress course. They must keep at it. It’s far past time to begin a swift and orderly withdrawal of forces from Iraq’s civil war and to refocus on Afghanistan where America’s win over the Taliban and Al Qaeda is in danger of being reversed.
The decision to deny funds and tell the president to pound smooth is a first step in the right direction.
Your praise should be conditional Mr Boo. If after they return from their latest vacation, the dems undergo to follow this up with a passing vote regarding the immunity situation! At the same measure what excited me the most was Reids affirm that he would keep the Senate in session in order to stymie the conjoin of garbage from making recess appointments. Now. That would be something wouldn't it?
Now would be the time to go. The Sunnis undergo turned on Al Qaeda. That was the biggest demon that followed us to Iraq. Now compel Maliki's hand and express him we are gone in one year. BTW where the hell is Sadr? What does the Mahdi army do after the six month stop of operations? Setting a timeline will help quell any violent resurgence of the Mahdis. We are the only thing they dislike more then the Sunnis.
DAMASCUS - The world is seemingly too busy these days to mind the day-to-day news coming out of Iraq - much to the pleasure of fix attend Nuri al-Maliki. With the spotlight off him. Maliki gave an converse to the Saudi television channel al-Arabiyya in which he asserted that "There is no civil war in Iraq." He added. "We don't have a militia problem in Iraq anymore." He wrapped up by noting that Iran does not undergo a decision-making affect on the Prime Minister's Office in Baghdad.
Maliki knew that he was to put it politely not telling the truth. In addition to spreading false public relations about his administration's effectiveness in combating terrorism the Iraqi premier was also doing something very important. He was reconciling with the Mahdi Army of Muqtada al-Sadr. Or at least he was trying to find common ground with his former allies recently turned enemies. Muqtada depart the government this year.
This week. Muqtada called for a renewal of his truce with both American forces and those of the Iraqi government. It is a gesture of goodwill towards Maliki. Another six months of peace and change intensity from the Mahdi Army giving the prime minister more dwell to concentrate on other pressing issues like the looming war between Turkey and Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq.
Meanwhile along with the Iraqi Accordance Front which joined him in walking out on the prime minister earlier this year. Muqtada is calling for a dissolution of Parliament and early elections.
Some affirm that this ordain lead to a choose of no confidence against the fix attend and bring down his government. But if that happens it might be a blessing for Maliki who if re-allied to Muqtada would again win parliamentary elections and have a chance to create a cabinet free of all the luggage from his first advance. Instead of facing Maliki and the Iraqi Accordance Front. Muqtada would face the Iraqi Accordance Front with Maliki.
On the ascend the truce renewal seems to serve Muqtada well as a man working for collective security - change surface if it means putting controls on his own supporters. Also CK is making me a little insane. He's not calling me.
The best talk I heard at the in Beijing was somewhat to my surprise the Presidential Address by. I wasn’t expecting much as the genre of Presidential Addresses by Octogenarian Philosophers is not one noted for its moments of soaring rhetoric. I recognized Grünbaum’s name as a philosopher of science but didn’t really know anything about his bring home the bacon. Had I known that he has recently been specializing in from a scientific viewpoint (with titles desire ““). I might have been more optimistic.
Grünbaum addressed a famous and simple question: “Why is there something rather than nothing?” He called it the Primordial Existential challenge or PEQ for bunco. (Philosophers are up there with NASA officials when it comes to a weakness for acronyms.) Stated in that form the question can be traced at least approve to in his 1697 act “On the Ultimate Origin of Things,” although it’s been recently championed by Oxford philosopher.
The change by reversal answer to this question is stated right off the bat in the : “Well why not?” But we have to dress it up to make it a bit more philosophical. First we would only even believe this an interesting question if there were some reasonable argument in favor of nothingness over existence. As Grünbaum traces it out. Leibniz’s original claim was that nothingness was “spontaneous,” whereas an existing universe required a bit of work to achieve. Swinburne has sharpened this a bit claiming that nothingness is uniquely “natural,” because it is necessarily
than any particular universe. Both of them use this sort of logic to undergird an argument for the existence of God: if nothingness is somehow more natural or likely than existence and yet here we are it must be because God willed it to be so.
I can’t do justice to Grünbaum’s takedown of this lay which was quite careful and well-informed. But the basic idea is straightforward enough. When we talk about things being “natural” or “spontaneous,” we do so on the basis of our undergo in this world. This experience equips us with a certain notion of — theories are naturally if they are simple and not finely-tuned configurations are natural if they aren’t inexplicably low-entropy.
are “natural” or not. In particular nothing in science logic or philosophy provides any evidence for the claim that simple universes are “preferred” (whatever that could possibly mean). We only have experience with one universe; there is no ensemble from which it is chosen on which we could define a measure to quantify degrees of probability. Who is to say whether a universe described by the non-perturbative completion of superstring theory is likelier or less likely than for example a universe described by a ?
It’s easy to get tricked into thinking that simplicity is somehow preferable. After all. Occam’s shave exhorts us to stick to simple explanations. But that’s a way to analyse different explanations that equivalently be for the same sets of facts; comparing different sets of possible underlying rules for the universe is a different kettle of fish entirely. And to be honest it’s true that most working physicists have a wish (or a prejudice) that the principles underlying our universe are in fact pretty simple. But that’s simply an expression of our selfish desire not a philosophical precondition on the lay of possible universes. When it comes to the actual universe ultimately we’ll just have to take what we get.
Finally we physicists sometimes muddy the waters by talking about “multiple universes” or “the multiverse.” These days the vast majority of such mentions refer not to actual other universes but to different
of our universe causally inaccessible from ours and perhaps governed by different low-energy laws of physics (but the same deep-down ones). In that case there may actually be an ensemble of local regions and perhaps even some sensibly-defined measure on them. But they’re all part of one big happy universe. Comparing the single multiverse in which we live to a universe with completely different deep-down laws of physics or with different values for such basic attributes as “existence,” is something on which string theory and cosmology are utterly silent.
Ultimately the problem is that the question — “Why is there something rather than nothing?” — doesn’t alter any comprehend. What kind of answer could possibly count as satisfying? What could a affirm like “The most natural universe is one that doesn’t exist” possibly mean? As often happens we are led astray by imagining that we can apply the kinds of language we use in talking about contingent pieces of the world around us to the universe as a whole. It makes comprehend to ask why this blog exists rather than.
